Oh man, where do I even start with Assassin’s Creed Shadows? From the moment Ubisoft dropped that first teaser, we were all losing our minds—jumping on beds, screaming into the void, thinking, “Finally, an AC game in Japan!” I mean, come on, this is the setting we’ve been begging for since the dawn of the franchise, right?
The Hype Train: From Cinematic Bliss to Gameplay Chaos
Then came the cinematic trailer, and holy crap, the hype went nuclear. Seeing Naoe—fragile, stealthy, ninja vibes—and Yasuke—brute-force samurai with insane strength—had me sold. I was ready to throw my wallet at Ubisoft right then and there. But then, the gameplay trailer dropped during Ubisoft Forward, and things got… messy. I remember watching it at my brother’s place at 3 AM (a big deal, okay?), and I was living for Naoe’s movement. The stealth, the grappling hook, the fluidity—it felt so peaceful, so right. I was like, “I AM BUYING THIS DAY ONE!” But, uh, that enthusiasm took a hit later on.
A few days after, we got the full gameplay reveal for both characters. Naoe? Still a masterpiece—take my freaking money, Ubisoft! But Yasuke? Hmm. I liked it, but I didn’t love it. The UI elements, the combat—it screamed Ghost of Tsushima inspiration. Don’t get me wrong, borrowing isn’t bad, but it felt a bit too on-the-nose, you know?
The Controversy Storm: Yasuke and Ubisoft’s Fumbles
And then came the controversies. Oh boy. Yasuke as a samurai? I didn’t mind him as a character—he’s cool, and I’d play a standalone game with him in a heartbeat—but in an Assassin’s Creed game? Nah, I’m not sold. Ubisoft could’ve done so much more with him outside the AC formula. Then there were the promotional disasters—messed-up packages sent to Japanese content creators, tone-deaf marketing moves, and the Japanese audience hating it. Yikes, Ubisoft, what were you thinking?
Oh, and let’s not forget the preorders. My God, the price tag! I was like, “Nope, I can’t drop that kind of cash on a game I’m not 100% confident in.” By this point, I’d seen multiple gameplay videos, and while the game looked gorgeous overall, I had my doubts—classic “Ubisoft concerns.” Would the side activities be well-designed, or just quantity over quality? I want missions with depth, like The Witcher 3—you know, where the side quests feel so good you forget they’re not the main story. Ubisoft, don’t just give me repetitive busywork, okay?
The Turnaround: February-March Gameplay Saved the Day
But then, oh man, February and March rolled around, and Ubisoft’s latest gameplay drops? Chef’s kiss. I genuinely enjoyed every bit of what I saw. The movement? Refined to near perfection—it’s not clunky anymore (well, maybe a little, but nothing my playstyle can’t handle). Those tanky health bars? Sliced down, so enemies drop faster. The environments? Looking better, with fewer distracting particles. And the side activities? From what I’ve seen, they’re actually promising!
Personally, I’m all in on Naoe. Why would I even touch Yasuke? This is an Assassin’s Creed game, and Naoe fits the stealthy assassin vibe like a glove. The changes from past games are so good—less map clutter, less hand-holding, more mission options, and stealth mechanics that remind me of Splinter Cell in the best way. The menus are slick, the outfits are sick, and the skill point system? Way better than Valhalla. I’m hyped, people!
Lingering Concerns: Will Ubisoft Deliver?
That said, I’ve still got some worries. The story and acting—are they going to hit me in the feels or fall flat? The side activities—will they prioritize quality over quantity? And movement—how seamless will it feel in the full game? Oh, and Ubisoft, if you’ve hidden some surprise elements in there, I’m ready to be blown away. Don’t let me down!
Day One Hype: I’m In!
After all this, I’ve made my decision: I’m playing Assassin’s Creed Shadows on day one, and I’m streaming it on my YouTube channel. Let’s see how it goes—will it live up to the hype, or crash and burn? I’m ready for the ride, and I want you all along for it!
