CDPR’s Cyberpunk 2 Update: Pre-Production, New City & Franchise Growth

CD Projekt Red has officially confirmed that Cyberpunk 2—formerly known as Project Orion—has entered pre-production. This marks a major milestone for the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, which has now sold over 25 million copies. Alongside this, CDPR has shared updates on Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, its financial performance, and the franchise’s future.
Cyberpunk 2 Moves to Pre-Production

After months of conceptual work, Cyberpunk 2 has officially entered pre-production, meaning CDPR is now actively developing prototypes, refining mechanics, and preparing for full-scale development.
A Second City: “Chicago Gone Wrong”
Mike Pondsmith, creator of the Cyberpunk tabletop series, revealed that the game will introduce a second city, described as “Chicago gone wrong”, alongside Night City. This addition could bring fresh environmental storytelling, new factions, and deeper world-building to the series.
Development Team & Timeline
- 96 developers are currently working on Cyberpunk 2, while The Witcher 4 remains CDPR’s primary focus with over 400 developers.
- CDPR’s co-CEO Michał Nowakowski suggested that the game might not release until 2030 or later, based on their typical development cycle.
Cyberpunk 2077’s Continued Success

Despite its rocky launch, Cyberpunk 2077 has become one of CDPR’s biggest successes:
- Over 25 million copies sold, solidifying its place as a major RPG franchise.
- Phantom Liberty expansion has surpassed 10 million copies sold, proving strong post-launch engagement.
- The game will be available on Nintendo Switch 2 when it launches on June 5, 2025.
CDPR’s Financial Snapshot
CD Projekt Red’s Q1 2025 financial results showed flat revenue at 226.3 million zlotys, with a 14.1% drop in net profit due to higher taxes. Despite this, the company remains focused on expanding its RPG portfolio.
What’s Next for Cyberpunk?
With Cyberpunk 2 now in pre-production, CDPR is laying the groundwork for the next era of the franchise. The introduction of a second city, alongside Night City, suggests a larger, more immersive world. While the game is still years away, CDPR’s commitment to refining its RPG mechanics and storytelling remains strong.
